Perfectionism (aka anxiety)
Perfectionism is tricky because it seems like a good thing. It means you did something so well that there are no possible errors in it at all. Except it’s really, really hard to be perfect. There’s the pressure you set for yourself as well as the pressure you feel from others around you.
Yet, perfectionism is often a mask for our own insecurities (oof) and is ultimately a form of anxiety. So how does one work on this?
In moving through high school, college, and workplace, there are all different ways that perfectionism shows up. The underlying feelings manage to stay the same. There’s shame, embarrassment, frustration, sadness, etc.
My work with perfectionism is gentle, because it can require a slow change. It is incredibly hard to shift an entire mindset from perfectionism to excellence. We work on strategies to help manage anxiety. We identify and connect (and sit with) those painful emotions and where they show up in our lives. From there, we create a new story for you. One filled with excellence instead of perfectionism and creating contentment with the work you produce.
Topics we talk about may include:
Where you learned you had to be perfect
Expectations
Current events
Mindfulness
Creating sustainable rhythms
Rest (perfectionism is exhausting)
Changing thought patterns
Boundaries
Psychoeducation
TLDR:
Anxiety in the form of perfectionism can be a barrier in actually achieving goals that we set out to attain. My goal is to work with you to help shift your mindset to excellence over perfection.
